Reviving an Age Old Craft ~ the ‘Bell Metal’ Craft of Sarthebari, the State of Assam, Incredible India!

Brass and Bell Metal products of Sarthebari in Assam are famous for their beauty and strength of form and utility. The principal items of brass are the Kalah (water pot), Sarai (a platter or tray mounted on a base), Kahi (dish), Bati (bowl), Lota (water pot with a long neck) and Tal (cymbals).

The utensils manufactured using Bell Metal have certain medicinal properties and it is believed that consuming food in these utensils keep intestinal problems at bay. Also drinking water consumed in Bell Metal glasses aids in cleaning your body due to certain mineral present in these glasses. These were prime reasons for these utensils being used to serve food to the Royal family of Ahom kings of the Great Ahom dynasty of Assam.

Sarthebari iand Hajo are home to the bell metal industry, the second largest handicraft of Assam after Bamboo Handicrafts. Bell metal is an alloy of copper and tin and utensils made from it are used for domestic and religious purposes. Bell metal as a craft has survived for ages, yet there seems to be very little transition in the method of preparing bell metal items so far as Sarthebari is concerned. The craftsmen who are also referred to as the ‘Kahar’ or ‘Orja’ still resort to the age old tools required for burning and shaping the metal. About 40 percent of the people in this village are engaged in this cottage industry and the hammering of the metal at the furnace can be heard throughout the village.

Besides Hajo and Sarthebari, production centers of these Bell Metal Crafts are also located in the Titabari and Raha regions. Assamese metal handicrafts are not only available to the local people, but can also be purchased as souvenirs by tourists. In a bid to compete with changing times and demands, modern day artisans have used their innovative skills to introduce new designs and patterns to the traditional metal craft of Assam, including the ones that can be used as decoration pieces.
